The Mindanao State University – Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU TCTO) has achieved a notable accomplishment in its debut participation in the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, placing 1,411th globally among institutions recognized for their commitment to sustainability. Nationally, MSU TCTO ranked 78th among Philippine universities, and notably, it emerged as the first and only institution in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to be included in this global sustainability assessment.

The UI GreenMetric, established by Universitas Indonesia, is an internationally recognized framework that evaluates universities based on six key indicators of environmental responsibility and sustainable development: Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste Management, Water Management, Transportation, and Education and Research.

MSU TCTO’s inclusion in the rankings highlights its ongoing initiatives to strengthen sustainable practices across the campus. These efforts include enhancing waste and water management systems, improving energy efficiency, expanding green and open spaces, promoting sustainable mobility, and integrating environmental sustainability into instruction, research, and community extension programs. As the southernmost higher education institution in the Philippines, MSU TCTO continues to prioritize climate resilience and responsible resource management for the benefit of Tawi-Tawi and nearby island communities.

In a statement, Chancellor Mary Joyce Z. Guinto-Sali, Ph.D., emphasized the importance of this achievement, saying: “Our inclusion in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings affirms MSU TCTO’s commitment to building a sustainable future for Tawi-Tawi and the entire Bangsamoro region. This recognition reflects the dedication of our faculty, staff, and students to promoting environmental stewardship grounded in our mission of Creating Opportunities and Transforming Lives. We will continue working toward a campus culture that upholds resilience, responsibility, and respect for our natural environment.”

This achievement affirms MSU TCTO’s growing role in contributing to national and global sustainability goals through innovative programs, community engagement, and research-driven environmental stewardship.
