About the College of Fisheries

The College of Fisheries advances sustainable fisheries education and research for the Sulu archipelago, equipping communities with the knowledge to responsibly harness and conserve marine resources.

College of Fisheries Building

Pioneering Fisheries Innovation

Empowering coastal communities through research, stewardship, and sustainable practices

Est. 1969

General Background

R.A. 6060 established the Mindanao State University–Sulu College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU-SCTO) on August 4, 1969 to extend higher education to Muslims and other cultural communities. In 1973, when Tawi-Tawi became a separate province, the institution was renamed MSU–Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU-TCTO).

In response to its legislative mandate, the College of Fisheries developed academic programs centered on the sustainable exploitation and conservation of the Sulu Sea’s fisheries resources. Research initiatives in fish processing, aquaculture, and capture fisheries were launched to uplift livelihoods and drive socio-economic development in coastal communities.

Since its founding year, the college has produced graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Fisheries across three specializations—fish culture, fish capture, and fish processing—as well as diplomates in fisheries technology. Many alumni now lead government and non-government institutions or operate their own enterprises, exemplifying the college’s enduring contributions to regional progress and marine stewardship.

Together with the Institute of Oceanography and Environmental Science (IOES) and other academic units, the College of Fisheries advances MSU-TCTO’s mission of education, research, and extension for the Sulu Archipelago.

Research & Innovation

Our faculty members lead cutting-edge research initiatives in fisheries science, addressing critical challenges in aquaculture, capture fisheries, post-harvest technology, and marine resource management

Capture Fisheries & Oceanography

Research on fisheries oceanography, fish stock assessment, and sustainable fishing practices. Studies focus on fisheries management, navigation and seamanship, and the assessment of small-scale commercial fisheries in the Sulu Archipelago.

Aquaculture & Seaweed Farming

Innovative research in aquaculture systems, seaweed cultivation, disease and health management, and feed formulation. Studies explore nutrient enrichment strategies, biological oceanography, and sustainable aquaculture practices for coastal communities.

Post-Harvest Fisheries & Food Technology

Research on fish processing, food engineering, and value-added product development. Studies focus on food preservation techniques, bioactive components extraction, thermodynamics in food processing, and innovative post-harvest technologies.

Algal Biotechnology & Microalgae Production

Advanced research in microalgae cultivation, algal biotechnology, and nutrient optimization. Studies focus on enhancing biochemical composition, lipid accumulation, and optimizing culture conditions for Nannochloropsis and Chlorella species.

Marine Fisheries & Coastal Resource Assessment

Research on marine fisheries assessment, seagrass biodiversity, and coastal resource management. Studies explore species composition, abundance, distribution, and diversity of marine resources in the Sulu Archipelago.

Fish Nutrition & Feed Management

Research on fish nutrition, feed additives, and feed formulation strategies. Studies focus on optimizing feed efficiency, developing sustainable feed alternatives, and enhancing growth performance in aquaculture systems.

Seaweed Consumption & Coastal Community Practices

Research on seaweed consumption practices, traditional knowledge, and community-based resource management in coastal communities. Studies explore cultural integration of marine resources and sustainable harvesting practices in Tawi-Tawi.
