Goals

1. Deliver high-quality undergraduate and graduate programs that integrate scientific knowledge with practical applications in fisheries, marine biology, and environmental science and technology, preparing graduates for leadership roles in research, industry, and policy.
2. Advance cutting-edge research that addresses critical environmental challenges, supports sustainable resource management, and informs policies and industry best practices in fisheries, oceanography, marine biology, and environmental science.
3. Strengthen partnerships with government agencies, industries, academic and research institutions, NGOs, LGUs, and local communities to implement science-based solutions that promote sustainable fisheries, marine conservation, and environmental stewardship.
4. Develop and advocate for sustainable practices in fisheries, aquaculture, coastal resource management, marine biodiversity conservation, and climate change adaptation to ensure long-term environmental resilience.
5. Equip faculty, students, and researchers with the expertise and skills to drive scientific advancements, lead environmental initiatives, and influence policy development, establishing COFEST as a recognized institution in marine and environmental research, sustainability, and innovation on the global stage.

Objectives

COFEST is dedicated to advancing its leadership in fisheries, oceanography, and marine biology and environmental science by striving to become a recognized Center of Excellence. To realize this vision, it aims to:

1. Enhance Academic Programs – Continuously improve BSc and MSc curricula by integrating the latest advancements in fisheries, oceanography, marine biology and environmental science. This includes incorporating emerging technologies, interdisciplinary approaches, and industry-aligned best practices. Additionally, COFEST aims to develop and offer PhD programs in the future to further strengthen research and academic excellence in these fields.
2. Expand Research Capacity – Secure diverse funding sources to support innovative research on pressing environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. Strengthen research efforts on economically important marine resources, including seaweeds, sea cucumbers, and other key fisheries. Foster collaborations with local and international research institutions, government agencies, and industry partners to enhance research impact and drive sustainable resource management.
3. Strengthen Community Engagement – Develop outreach programs that translate research into real-world applications, focusing on the sustainable management of economically important marine resources such as seaweeds, sea cucumbers, shellfish, and other fisheries. Engage local communities and stakeholders through capacity-building initiatives, policy dialogues, workshops, and awareness campaigns. Foster partnerships with government agencies, industries, and NGOs to ensure that research findings contribute to sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, and marine resource management.
4. Improve Graduate Employability – Achieve a 90% graduate placement rate within two years by strengthening career services, expanding industry partnerships, and providing internships and hands-on training opportunities. Align academic programs with workforce demands to equip graduates with the skills needed for careers in fisheries, oceanography, aquaculture, and environmental science.
5. Increase National and International Recognition – Strive to attain recognition as a Center of Development in fisheries, oceanography, marine biology and environmental sciences, with the long-term goal of becoming a Center of Excellence. This will be achieved through strategic collaborations, high-impact research publications, enhanced academic programs, and active engagement in national and international academic, research and policy networks.
6. Develop Infrastructure – Secure funding and resources for state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, advanced research equipment, and updated technological infrastructure to support teaching and research. This includes a phased approach to infrastructure upgrades.
